The aim is to familiarize the student with the concepts of sustainable tourism and ecotourism and with their different definitions. The student gets tools to become familiar with the main tools of management and planning of sustainable tourism. The aim is to provide the student with the information about how these issues are applied in the various areas of tourism industry. The course provides exercises which help the students to practise and improve their communication and evaluation skills.

The course consists of four (4) chapters. The introductory chapter will deal with the concepts and definitions of sustainability and ecotourism, a tourist point of view and the development of environmental issues in tourism in Finland, Europe and worldwide. This will be followed by the framework of legislation, policy guidelines and regulations guiding the area in question. The next chapter gives examples of tools which are needed in sustainable tourism management and planning. It also provides more practical approach to the subject through different case studies and applications. The course concludes with the question about future.

This course is an Edulink web course and it is done together with Arcada, Haaga Institute and Helia.

The course starts with the obligatory introductory lecture, in September,
which will be informed later at Haaga Institute, Pajuniityntie 11,
