C. CRITICAL AND ANALYTICAL MEDIA INDUSTRY KNOWLEDGE

Knowledge of:
- Main theories of society & technology
- Main concepts, issues, debates and methods
- Main interpretations of the relationship between society and technology
Skills:
- Analytical skills associated with critical epistemic competences (understanding, interpretation, formulation and communication of opinions, etc.).
- Interpretative skills: identification of relations of power associated to relations of meaning & the role of particular texts in the social construction of reality.
- Communicative skills: the formulation of knowledge-based opinions about relations between concepts & theories (e.g. media & democracy).
- Critical media skills, related to the understanding of the relation between media technology and media texts.
- Evaluative ethical skills to the evaluation of the social impact of both overt and or latent content of multimodal texts.

Approach:
- Critical attitudes towards digitalization & mediatization.
- predisposition to democratic communication and critical investigation.
- inclination to relate media work, production, distribution and consumption to issue of social justice and equality.
- Normative interest and commitment to the possibility of emancipative social change and a more equitable political economy of the media

The main content of the course consists in an organized review of the main approach to digitalization and its impact on society

To pass the course the student needs to attend a minimum of 3 lectures out of 5, actively participate to discussions in class and write an essay. The final grade will be based on the final essay.
