The degree thesis is an official and public document. Parts of the degree thesis can be classified as confidential only in exceptional cases and for special reasons. In these cases, the public part of the thesis shall in itself be clear and understandable also without the confidential part.
Confidentiality classification of parts of the thesis is possible only if:
- The degree thesis contains information on inventions, new facilities, procedures or developments that can have commercial significance;
- The degree thesis contains information on the actions of authorities classified as confidential as defined in the Act on the Openness of Government Activities (621/1999); or
- The degree thesis contains trade and business secrets.
The supervisor is responsible for the preparation of the decision and acts as the rapporteur together with the Dean, while the Administrative and HR Director is the decision-maker. The supervisor checks that the degree thesis meets the conditions for confidentiality classification. The student is informed of the decision with a written decision.
The student should write the thesis so that the confidential part constitutes a separate section of the thesis. The confidential part should be able to be omitted without making the thesis incomprehensible. Parts of the thesis must not be redacted.
Submission of the thesis:
- Create two different documents; one where everything is included and one without confidential part.
- Submit the entire thesis to your supervisor.
- Once the work is approved, upload the thesis (without the confidential part) to Theseus. The confidential part is never uploaded on Theseus.
The student should specify the parts of the thesis to be classified as confidential on the form “Application for confidentiality classification”.
