Competency aims

The course in basic sexology offers an introduction to the
interdisciplinary field of human sexuality. The course explores a
broad range of issues relating to gender, sex and sexuality. The
aim of the course is to give basic knowledge related to human
sexuality. The course is designed to provide basic knowledge
and skills set in the basic areas of theory, clinical practice and
social policy as they pertain to sexuality in childhood,
adolescence, adulthood, and later life. During the course you
will become acquainted with key concepts of sexuality and
relationships, thus familiarizing and providing yourself with a
language of sexuality allowing you to articulate thoughts and
express emotions or feelings, using a precise vocabulary devoid
of discriminatory or sexist connotations. At the end of the
course you are expected to have knowledge of how people
develop as sexual beings over the lifespan, as well as have
theoretical, ethical and pedagogical competences to meet
individuals as sexual beings in different circumstances, from
different cultures, and of different sexual orientation.

Learning outcomes

After completion of the course, students should:

-Have become aware of and professionalized their own sexual
attitudes and values related to sexuality.
-Have developed an understanding of how different worldviews
have consequences for professional practice related to
sexuality.
-Have the ability to recognize and discuss sexual matters in their
respective disciplines.
-Exercise critical judgment with regard to media broadcasting of
images connected with the various dimensions of sexuality.
-Understand similarities and differences between female and
male sexuality and have gained knowledge and understanding
of different experiences of sexual identity and gender identity.
-Understand sexual development across the lifespan.
-Understand human sexual rights and legislation concerning
sexual health
-Have learnt how to act ethically and promote sexual health in
different disciplinary contexts according to guiding standards.

The course structure is based on the following themes:
-Perspectives on human sexuality
-Human sexual rights and legislation concerning sexual health
-Sexual development across the lifespan
-Gender, Gender identity, Sexual orientation
-Attraction, Relationships, Sexual behaviours
-Sexual health promotion, Sex education, Sex therapy

None

Additional information

The group size is limited to 98 students. Students from the
Social and Health sciences will be prioritised if more than 98
apply for the course.

Assessment requirements

Lectures and seminars have a dialogue of working where
students are active and participating, thus allowing students to
reflect on own understanding and practice.
Students will participate in multidisciplinary basic groups. The
groups intend to facilitate the exchange of experience and
knowledge through work on specific issues. Students are also
expected to work independently with the study themes
throughout the course. Students are expected to engage with
the literature through significant reading.
Examination form: Group work + individual essay.
