Competency aims
The aim of the course is that you understand the
structure and function of the human body during
exercise as well as the physiological effects and
adaptation processes of physical activity and
training. You know the physiological background
of different physical qualities and can take into
account the importance of physical activity for
health. In addition, you can explain and argue
over how exercise affects the physiological
functions in the human body and its importance
for the functional capacity and performance. You
master flexibly different measurement methods in
exercise physiology and can critically choose and
use them. You understand the meaning of physical
activity and exercise training as a resource for
the development of human health, functional
capacity and performance. You can learn and
cooperate together with your peers and share
information with them.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student is
expected to be able to
- Explain the basic concepts in exercise
physiology
- Understand and describe metabolism in
different exercise performances
- Describe body's acute physiological responses
and chronic adaptations to different kind of
physical activity
- Describe how the body's regulation mechanisms
function during exercise
- Compare different exercises and physical
qualities and their effects on the body
- Describe what performance development is
physiologically based on
- Execute basic measurements in exercise
physiology both at rest and during exercise
- Write a report about practical measurements
in exercise physiology
- Take into account the importance of physical
activity and training for different people
Course contents
In the course we discuss physiology in healthy
individuals during acute and chronic exercise.
We concentrate on
- Basic principles of exercise physiology
- Function of the neuromuscular system during
exercise
- Metabolism
- Function of the cardiorespiratory system
during exercise
- Hormonal system
- Training effects
