Competency aims

The aim of the course is to teach the modern
methods of analysing and identifying materials,
in order to successfully apply the taught
techniques
to solve realistic engineering problems.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student is
expected to be able to understand modern
analytical methods used and choose an
appropriate testing method for the analysis
and
identification of different materials.

Course contents

Online lectures and theoretical exercises on
selecting analytical methods, spectroscopic
methods, thermal methods, chromatographic
methoods, microscopic methods and failure
analysis.

Laboratory exercises on optical microscopy, UV-
Vis, FTIR and DSC. We will hold them in small
groups and comply with guidelines for safe
working. Alternative tasks may be allocated to
students unable to come to Arcada for the lab
exercises.

Prerequisites and co-requisites

Polymer Chemistry
Laboratory safety for engineers or Introduction to
University Studies (2017-18 or earlier)

Additional information

The lectures and theoretical exercises will be
held onine in Zoom. The lab exercises will be
held in small groups and comply with guidelines
for safe working. Alternative tasks may be
allocated to students unable to come to Arcada
