Competency aims

The aim of the course is to look at the development
of social media from a historical perspective,
viewing them as the outcome of previous innovations.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student is expected
to be able to

1. explain the history of media;
2. analyse the nature of a medium;
3. display this analysis in the form of a tetrad;
4. present this analysis and tetrad by creating an
explanatory pecha kucha.

Course contents

1. Introduction to Marshall McLuhan and ideas
concerning media ecology;
2. History of media, from the beginning of the
electric age;
3. Overview of narrative forms in electric media;
4. Social media as narrative;
5. Tetrads as a tool for analysing media.
6. Pecha kucha as a way of narrating such an
analysis.

None

Recommended or required reading

The literature around social media changes at such a
rapid rate, that a list of online articles will be
placed in Its Learning before week 1 of the course.

Assessment requirements

To pass the course the student should pass the
following examinations:
Examination 1 presentation of tetrad (30%)
Examination 2 presentation of pecha kucha (70%)
(examinations include written examination tests,
demonstrations and presentations, reports and
produktions, essays, and also presence at
specified occasions)
