Competency aims

The seminar is accomplished through an
ongoing Socratic dialogue. It is essentially a
place where assigned readings are discussed,
questions can be raised and debates can be
conducted. The Socratic method is a cooperative
argumentative dialogue between individuals, based
on asking and answering questions to stimulate
critical thinking and to draw out ideas and
underlying presuppositions.

Learning outcomes

The student will have first hand experience of
conducting applied research in media management.
The thesis seminar provides the
student feedback and guidance that will help
him/her to develop and finalize the thesis. Also,
the student develops skills in academic
presentation, argumentative dialogue and critical
thinking.

Course contents

The master's thesis project consists of a
research & development project, possibly for a
client or the student's employer, and a thesis
report with key results of the development
project. Students can start to develop the thesis
project already in the beginning of the program.

Every student needs to make at least one seminar
presentation and also to act as an opponent at
least once for a another presentation. The
students are also given other assignments.

at Arcada is similar to a research article in
media studies. The length of such articles are

longer than that. The thesis should at least
include the following elements:
1) The relevance of the problem,
2) description of relationship to existing
knowledge,
3) Research question or hypothesis,
4) description of research method,
5) Results and
6) Discussion.
