Bildung & critical thinking; artistic and critical communicative competences.

Learning outcomes

Knowledge - Greater control of knowledges relating to the interpretation and production of texts in the domain of artistic and critical communication. Introduction to the main interpretative theories. The nature and roles of conventions in artistic expression. The theory and practices of artistic research. Traditional and critical theories of meaning in the arts and humanities.

Skills - Participants to this course are supposed to possess minimum levels of technical skills in their professional domain. The skills developed in this course are those associated to its competences and relates primarily to the effective creation, organization and use of meanings associated to the large variety of artistic and critical communication.

Attitudes - The pedagogy of Bildung used in this course, will challenge its participant to look at the social production of meaning from the standpoint of critical constructionism and the idea that ?meaning is the eye of the beholder?. Through this attitude, participants will acquire greater (more independent) control on the production of meaning through the mediation of art and technology; more critical attitudes towards the cultural industry (the commercial production of meaning through the commodification of cultural); greater capacity and inclination to exploit the subversive potential of art and artistic work based on a deeper understanding of societal needs and repressed desires in this domain.

Lecture 1 ? About the meaning of life. Agency and Method: who should decide? (Agency)? How to decide? (Method)
Lecture 2 ? About Bildung and how it differs from traditional pedagogies
Discussion ? [in this time we clarify issues, concepts, share opinions, formulate suggestions, make example, etc.]

Session 2 ? The theory and practice of Self-
Lecture 3 ? The self as a ?moving target?: social constructivism and developmental psychology. How can we preserve a unified sense of the self if we never stop changing? Where does change comes from: biology and society (natural and social environment, genetics and epigenetics, etc.)
Lecture 4 ? Dimensions of change: internal & the external. Introspection or how to look at ourselves changing. The external dimension: ambivalence and interpretation

Session 3 ? Bildung and the Media
Lecture 5 ? Bildung & the media: learning to use rather than be used by the media
Lecture 6 ? The interpretation of media texts and the development of the critical self

Session 4 ? Bildung and creativity
Lecture 7 ? Creativity, art and self-development
Lecture 8 ? The art and functions of self-critique: an introduction

Session 5 ? Media, art and the critical constitution of the self
Lecture 9 ? Recovering what has been lost: the sovereign self and the transformation of challenges into opportunities.
Lecture 10 ? About indeterminacy: Bildung and the Self as never-ending processes

Assessment requirements

To pass the course the student will have to
a) attend the lectures
b) actively participate to tutorials
c) produce an original media text about topic of choice accompanied by a written argumentation about the relevance of the topic, the nature of the conventions associated to it and the way in which the original media text challenges these conventions.

The original media text and its argumentation will account for 50% of the final grade. The quantity and quality of attendance for the remaining 50%
