Competency aims
Students will demonstrate an understanding of, and basic skills in using:
1. Social media sites as mechanisms for disseminating news and information;
2. Social media as mechanisms for monitoring public reaction to news and information;
3. McLuhan tetrads as mechanisms for analysing social media;
4. Online tools such as Trello as a way of organising and structuring presentations;
5. Pecha kucha as a means of structuring presentations.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the course students will understand:
1. the history of digital media;
2. the tools and techniques Marshall McLuhan used to analyse this history;
3. the uses and functions of social media;
4. contemporary concerns about privacy and data collection and retention;
