Competency aims

The aim of the course is that you can:

Understand the prehospital chain of care.

Recognize the patients' condition and initiate
Basic level (EMT) prehospital care.

Be able to assess the patients? situation and call
for assistance or back-up, if necessary

Adequately direct the patient, both verbally and
in written text, to further care.

Work with assessment, treatment and transport
equipment used in EMT level prehospital care

Recognize and use the forms of anesthesia used in
prehospital care

and the following SDG?s:
4: Quality Education
5: Gender Equality

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the student can:

Meet and communicate with patients and relatives
in a prehospital setting

Understand the need for teamwork and communication
in a prehospital care situation

Work with the equipment in the ambulance

Understand the Emergency Dispatch Center's role

Adequately handle VIRVE-radio communication in
prehospital settings.

Is able to recognize the common reasons for
breathing problem and can treat them on Basic
level

Kan administer inhaled medications and is
knowledgeable in their indications

Kan independently start and administer CPAP, is
knowledgeable in their indications,
contraindications and risks related.

Is knowledgeable in the electrophysiology of ECG-
registering on Basic level

Can adequately register a 15-lead ECG and
interpret in on Basic level

Is knowledgeable in the most common cardiac
rhythms and can differentiate between threatening
and non-threatening findings.

Can identify signs of ischemia on an ECG

Knows the most common causes for chest paint can
differentiate between threatening and non-
threatening findings.

Can treat a patient with cardiological findings
(STEMI, UAP, arrythmias) on basic level

Understand the importance of observing the
patient's vital signs, and knows how to treat
problems in these.

Can identify the most common causes for
unconsciousness.

Can identify a patient suffering from stroke

Understands the reasons and effects of common
intoxications

Can recognize an epileptic seizure and most common
reasons and treat the seizure on Basic level.

Perform quality and up-to-standards BLS
resuscitation

Understands the concept of trauma energy and
mechanism and can apply them in the assessment of
a trauma patient

Can adequately perform a trauma assessment

Is familiar with the different forms of
immobilization and can utilize them

Has an overview of the assessment and care of the
patient with acute abdominal pain, hypothermia and
burn victims

Is familiar with the operative multi-authority
collaboration in EMS on a basic level

Is aware of the most common risks associated with
prehospital care

Is familiar with the most common causes of
pediatric illness and care of them on Basic level

Is aware of the most common acute gynecological
illnesses and care of them on Basic level.

Be familiar with the different forms of anesthesia
and the medication used for that in a prehospital
setting

Identifies the circumstances for the need to call
for assistance and back-up.

Recognize and be aware of his/her physical level
(strengths and weaknesses) as well as potential
physical training needed to be able to uphold
their ability to work in prehospital environment

Understand patient safety in a prehospital context
on a basic level
