Competency aims
The aim of the course is to:
- update clinical nursing skills suitable for
Finnish
health care context (internal medicine,
surgical
care, intensive care and perioperative care
(anesthesia and instruments), home care and
policlinics.
- Understand the Finnish health care system
from
a holistic perspective, is able to work in an
aseptic
way and be able to prioritize nursing tasks
according to patient needs.
-Feel confident in implementing previous
nursing
skills in the Finnish health care system.
- Demonstrates ability to assess and develop
their
own skills.
- Self-assessment, development and marketing of
their personal competence
- Demonstrates knowledge of independent
communication and interaction in his or her
native
language, the second official language of
Finland,
and at least one foreign language.
- Finnish, Swedish and a foreign language

At the end of the course the student is
expected

-see the Finnish health care system as a whole
-be able to work as nurse from a Finnish
nursing

INTERNAL MEDICINE AND INTENSIVE CARE (4
cr)
- patient assessment (ABCDE)
- I&O balance
- iv cannulation
- hanging iv solutions/iv antibiotics
-iv pumps
- abg/ arterial line
- Respiration
- tracheostomy
- oral & nasal suctioning
- ambu-bag oxygenation VM
- OF, CPAP/Bi-pap
- care of unconsious patient
- care for patient on ventilator
- deep suctioning (closed-open)
- resuscitation
PERIOPERATIVE CARE (2 cr)
- abg/ arterial line
- anesthesia
- mid-line/picc
- setting up a clean table/ sterile table at
bedside
and operation room
- sterile glove application/removal/ assisting
doctor to apply
- tubes/draines/chesttubes
- sterile dressing change
- dressing and removing sterile gown
POLICLINIC ( 2cr):
- cardioversion
- patient assessment
- placing a patient on monitor (non-invasive)
- relevant laboratory results for main patient
groups
HOME CARE (1 cr):
- blood sample/blood drawing
- ECG: obtaining ecg 3-12-14 leads
- Wound care (Vac)
- sutures/staples removal
Prerequisites and co-requisites
The student must have a previous nursing degree
from aborad.
Additional information
- Compulsory attendance at introductory lecture,
practical exercises and simulation.
- The teaching is in English and simulated nursing
situations and cases are held in Finnish
