Competency aims
The aim of the study unit is: The student develops
competence in pharmacotherapy and drug calculations
in elderly care.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the study unit the student is
expected to be able to:
Understand the characteristics of patient safety
in pharmacotherapy within elderly care
Understand the basics of clinical pharmacology in
pharmacotherapy of the most common diseases of the
elderly and know how to apply the information in
nursing
Know how to guide pharmacotherapy and its self-
monitoring to patients and their immediate circle
Know how to use drug databases and apply the
information in pharmacotherapy
Know how to execute the various forms of drug
calculations without errors and understand the
significance of the operations in nursing

Characteristics of pharmacotherapy
Drug and medication safety
The most common drug ingredient groups and their
areas of use, modes of action and routes of
administration
Therapeutic effects of medicines, side and joint
effects and mechanisms of combined action
Self-medication

to treatment
