Competency aims

The aim of the course is to provide knowledge
about the organizational structure of mental
and
pediatric health care. The student gets
knowledge
about different kinds of patients suffering
from
health problems, furthermore the student gets
knowledge about care of the patients. The
student
gains experience of working with psychiatric
and
pediatric patients and is provided with
counseling.

The specific learning outcomes for practice i
psychiatric care are:

Theoretical competence:

  • Knows the structure of psychiatric health
    care
    system
  • Has knowledge about mental health and
    disturbances in mental health

Competence to act in practical situations:
-Understands the special aspects of the
processes
in mental health care and has capacity to apply
this
-Is able to identify, meet and take care of
patients suffering from different kind of
mental
problems and illnesses
-Can participate in planning, realizing and
evaluation of patient care, furthermore has
capacity to create an individual plan for
patient
care
-Understands the meaning of caring
relationship,
furthermore has capacity to use the self to
promote patient's mental health

Ethical competence:
-Can apply ethical principles in psychiatric
context
-Is aware about own capacities and limits,
furthermore can use counseling as a
professional
tool for self development
-Understands variations in the phenomena of
closeness and distance in psychiatric care

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student is
expected
to be able to understand the organizational
structure of mental and pediatric health care.
The student can meet, support and care a
psychiatric and a pediatric patient in acute
phases of the illness. The student can apply
ethical principles in caring, the student
understands her/his role in the caring
relationship and understands the meaning of
counseling in developing mental and pediatric
health care.
Specific goals for Pediatric care
Theoretical knowledge

  • know the most common diseases that occur on
    the
    ward and be aware of the barriersrs these cause
    for children and family
  • ability to act
    understand what impact a disease has on
    children
    and family
  • ability to meet with respect and sensitively
    listen to and create a safe environment for
    children and family
  • ability to create caring relationship with
    children and family perform the basic care and
  • report assessments orally and written
    -ability to work as team member and member of
    the
    multiprofessional team.
    -ability to plan and act in first aid
    situations.
    -ability to create own learning goals, create
    strategies how to meet these carries out and
    evaluate those.
  • understands the precautions in medication
    with
    children
    Ethical approach
  • realizes the responsibility towards
    child/family/team and evaluates own activities
    from the humanistic base beginning with clients
    rights and own responsibilities.

Course contents

Practical training in pediatric and mental health
care hospitals

Prerequisites and co-requisites

Theoretical studies in pediatric and mental health
care.

Additional information

If it has been over two years since one or more of the required prerequisite courses have been completed, the student should demonstrate sufficient knowledge before participating in the practical training. The student should achieve approved results in the course or its practical exercises.
