Competency aims
Within this study unit we will focus on the
following competencies:
- Understanding the mechanisms of action and side
effects of key drugs used in emergency care.
-Understand the central concepts of pharmacology,
such as pharmacodynamics, pharmacokinetics and be
able to apply that knowledge in emergency care
practice
- Safe administration of medication in emergency
situations and in-patient guidance, and to
understand the mechanisms of the occurrence of the
most common intoxications and pharmacological
treatment.
Learning outcomes
Once you have completed the study unit you will
know how
to:
-Understand how pharmacokinetic and -dynamic
affect the
activity of different forms of medication in the
human
body
-Recognize and describe the most common
medications used
in prehospital emergency care settings and
understand
their mechanism, side effects, indications and
contraindications
-Autonomously be able to dose the most common
medications
used in prehospital emergency care, through either
per
os, intramuscular, intraosseal or intravenous
route.
-Recognize and understand the physiological
effects of
the most common medications used or met in
emergency care
settings.
-Recognize and understand the mechanism of the
most
common antidotes for intoxication, such as opiate
or
benzodiazepam intoxications.
-Understand how different pain medications work to
different forms of pain and be able to select the
most
appropriate pain medication in the prehospital
emergency
care setting
