C. CRITICAL AND ANALYTICAL MEDIA INDUSTRY KNOWLEDGE

Learning outcomes

Knowledge of:
- conventions regulating the main form of expression
- the main concepts and other intellectual tools to the critical analysis of media texts;
- the main critical approaches to media studies to problem relating to the production, distribution and consumption of media texts

Skills:
- Analytical skills associated with critical epistemic competences (understanding, interpretation, formulation and communication of opinions, etc.).
- Communicative skills: the formulation of knowledge-based opinions about media and media texts (e.g. film criticism).
- Critical media literacy skills, related to the understanding, and critical usage of media texts. ? Interpretative skills applied to the role of particular texts in the social construction of reality.
- Evaluative ethical skills to the evaluation of the social impact of both overt and or latent content of multimodal texts.

Approach:
- predisposition to democratic communication and critical investigation.
- inclination to relate media work, production, distribution and consumption to issue of social justice and equality.
- Normative interest and commitment to the possibility of emancipative social change and a more equitable political economy of the media

Course contents

The title of the project run at CML for this year is "Utopia as Method: The imaginary reconstitution of society in the digital age". In this project students will engage with the problem of social change to produce a narrative visualization of relevant social problems and their ideal solutions.

Prerequisites and co-requisites

The course Critical Media Laboratory is a follow up of Critical Media Analysis and the competences acquired in the latter are necessary for effective participation to the former.
The course is in English and a good control of this language is also required.

Assessment requirements

To pass the course the student will have to
a) attend the lectures
b) actively participate to tutorials
c) produce an original media text about topic of choice accompanied by a written argumentation about the relevance of the topic, the nature of the conventions associated to it and the way in which the original media text challenges these conventions.

The original media text and its argumentation will account for 50% of the final grade. The quantity and quality of attendance for the remaining 50%
