Competency aims
The aim of the course is to provide students a
competence to analyse heat transfer problems in
engineering applications.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course,
1.Students understand the different modes of heat
transfer and their applications.
2. As a result of validation analyses using FEM,
students will learn how to model heat transfer
problems on COMSOL Multiphysics FEM software
3. Students will also be able to model time based
(transient) heat transfer problems based on the
Lumped sum capacitance method that has a wide
applications in engineering design, cooling
analysis and more
4. The students will understand convection heat
transfer coefficient analysis within thermal
boundary layers and conduct analysis of local and
average heat transfer coefficients
5. Students will understand basics of radiation
and analyses problems on solar radiation

1.Introduction on the three modes of heat
transfer
2.Relation of heat transfer to first law of
thermodynamics (Conservation of Energy)
3.Using FEM in heat transfer analysis (ComSol)
4.One-dimensional conduction in Cartesian and
cylindrical coordinates
5.Thermal resistance in plane walls and
concentric pipes
6.Fundamentals in transient conduction (one-
dimension)
7.Convection and thermal boundary layer
8.Introduction to radiation
