Competency aims
During this course a broad attitude toward scientific theory, research methods and research ethics will be undertaken. These are all compulsory elements that each student has to take into consideration when writing scientific papers and thesis at the Human Ageing and Elderly Services study program. These three elements (theory, method and ethic) all together form foundation in systematic and logic narratives about the social reality you undertake to describe during studies at Arcada without exposing anyone in an unethical way. Scientific theory, research methods and research ethics cannot be separated from each other in research project; instead they belong to the dialectic process forming a good research project.
The aim of the course is to when it comes to:
Scientific theory to
- introduce theoretical perspectives and concepts in research on health and social services
- describe and show how electronic literature can become valid recourses for research projects
Research methods to - present some of the primary methods used in social and health-research
Research ethics to - discuss research ethical guidelines student at Arcada are expected to follow doing research projects in order not to expose anyone to unethical behavior.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student is expected to be able to
- formulate appropriate research questions in your own field of expertise
- understand the main differences in a qualitative and a quantitative research approach
- understand and apply the steps of a research process in your own work
- recognize aspects of study that can be ethically problematic including subject selection, conflicts of interest, and use of vulnerable populations
- recognize the key concepts in informed consent, including respect for autonomy, voluntariness, and decision-making capacity.
