Arcada aims to be at the forefront of new technology and smart solutions. In line with this, we encourage all our staff and students to responsibly adopt and use AI-supported tools.

The UAS’s guidelines cover various types of AI-supported tools, broadly interpreted (tools for e.g., image, video, programming, mathematics, and text). These tools offer opportunities but also significant challenges. These guidelines aim to ensure ethical and thoughtful use of AI-supported tools in all activities. The guidelines will be adapted as the tools develop.

Arcada’s own guidelines are based on recommendations from Arene External link and UNESCO.

General Guidelines

All staff are encouraged to stay updated on AI-supported tools in their field. The UAS encourages everyone to consider how these tools can support and develop their work processes. Maintain a discerning perspective on the limitations of these tools.

Fundamental principles for using all AI-supported tools:

  • Honesty and transparency
  • Human-AI-human interaction
  • Compliance with data protection regulations
  • Ethical assessment

Only use material you have copyright for when using these tools. Do not upload entire articles or other material you did not produce yourself.

Data Protection and Confidentiality

  • Confidential material and/or personal data must never be entered into AI-supported tools.
  • Many AI-supported tools cannot guarantee sufficient data protection.
  • Try to understand how the tool you are using works and read about its training data and potential biases.

Guidelines for Students

Always follow the instructions given for the specific course.

  • There are course sections where the use of AI-supported tools is encouraged and others where you are expected to complete tasks without them. Follow the given instructions carefully.
  • When you use AI-supported tools, you should be transparent about it. Proper citation and explanation of AI use should always be included when these tools are used. If you do not provide the correct, original source, it can be equated with plagiarism or cheating. (AI is not a scientific source.) Follow the instructions in Arcada's writing guide.

Responsible use of AI-supported tools is allowed when explicitly stated in the task description.

  • Language models can be used for language/text processing. Familiarize yourself with different language models such as Chat GPT and understand how to use them effectively. Also, learn to understand the limitations of the tool.
  • Be curious about other AI-supported tools that are central to your field. Each model has its own purpose.
  • Use AI for your learning and personal development.

You are always responsible for the content of the assignments you submit.

  • As a student, you are responsible for what you submit and produce.
  • When working on text assignments, AI-supported tools (e.g., Grammarly) are a good support for creating grammatically correct or structurally smooth texts.
  • Note that a challenge with AI-supported tools is that they can produce text that seems correct but contains errors and even gross factual inaccuracies (so-called hallucinations).
  • An AI-supported tool, such as a language model like Chat GPT, can be used to format existing text or generate ideas for self-written text.
  • Be transparent and always indicate which AI you used, why, and how, and include the tool in your references.
  • An AI-supported tool, such as a language model, should never be used to produce a final assignment or maturity exam from scratch, and such text created with a language model should not be presented as your own work.
