Level of qualification: 1st cycle
Scope: 240 cr
Duration: 4 years
Mode of study: full-time
Language of tuition: English
Programme director: Fredrik Welander

In addition to providing a solid foundation in IT and programming, the Information Technology programme also equips you with specialized skills in one of our two specialisation areas. Data Processing and Analytics offers deep insights into data management, analysis, and machine learning, while Intelligent Robotics explores the exciting frontier between robotics, artificial intelligence, and human-machine interaction. The program fosters mathematical and logical thinking, making it an excellent springboard for further studies.

Placement in working life/career opportunities

The programme opens up career opportunities across a wide range of fields, offering you considerable choice and excellent prospects for advancement in both Finnish and international companies. In addition to your studies in information technology, you can gain further expertise through development studies in areas such as business administration and entrepreneurship, game design, or subjects offered by other universities of applied sciences.

Your professional responsibilities may include improving organisational efficiency using modern tools for advanced data management, optimisation and forecasting, or developing innovative, AI-driven solutions that bridge the digital and physical worlds. Many graduates also choose to become entrepreneurs.

Common job titles include programmer, developer, IT specialist, software engineer, project manager, and analyst.

Research, development and innovation

At Arcada, researchers, lecturers, and students work side by side on various research, development, and innovation projects. Within the field of information technology at Arcada, research is conducted on topics such as computer vision models for motion analysis, Trustworthy AI, digital twins, large language models (LLMs), and human-robot interaction.

Postgraduate studies

You can choose to continue your studies at a university (Master’s level), or after gaining a few years of work experience, pursue a higher university of applied sciences degree (Master) at Arcada or another university of applied sciences. On the job market, a higher university of applied sciences degree is equivalent to a Master’s degree from a traditional university. Within IT, Arcada offers a higher degree through its Master’s programme Machine Intelligence and Data Science (MIND).

If you wish to take your studies even further, you can pursue doctoral studies at university level after completing a Master’s degree.

Study environment

The Information Technology programme is based on competence-driven learning with a clear aim of preparing students for working life. The studies are interdisciplinary, with a strong technical and logical foundation. A distinctive feature of the programme is that subject studies are largely project-based, drawing on the department’s experience in IT and analytics research.

The study environment is multicultural, open, curious, and personal. The network of friends and professional contacts you can build during your studies is an investment in your future. As an engineering student, you also have the opportunity to join the student association TLK, which organises various social events alongside your studies.

Everyday life at Arcada is filled with intercultural encounters. Students and staff from more than 50 different countries come together under one roof, and dialogue and collaboration across cultural and national boundaries are as natural as they are inspiring.

Additional information

The degree programme in Information Technology is primarily taught in Swedish. It also includes language studies, and your specialisation courses are conducted in English. The international study environment at Arcada, along with opportunities for study and internships both in Finland and abroad, prepares you for an international career.

International student exchange

While we welcome the world to Arcada, our staff and students also look beyond national borders. We are members of several international exchange and cooperation networks in education and research, and we encourage our students to take courses, go on exchanges, and carry out projects abroad. As a student in Information Technology, you can study at universities of applied sciences in countries such as Germany, the Netherlands, and Denmark.
