On this page, you will find the structure of studies if you began your studies in 2025. Your degree comprises 240 ECTS credits and is completed over a period of 4 years.

Structure of the programme

The programme is structured so that students can complete 15 ECTS credits during a 10-week study period. One ECTS credit corresponds to 27 hours of study or work. Four study periods make up one academic year, and students are expected to complete 60 ECTS credits per year. The competence-based curriculum consists of the following modules: general studies (15 ECTS), professional studies (135 ECTS), development studies (30 ECTS), practical training (30 ECTS), and research studies (30 ECTS). In total, the programme comprises 240 ECTS credits. We recommend following a specific order of studies, and individual study plans can be created when needed to support your progress.

Learning Approach

Project-based and student-centred learning is the overarching pedagogical approach used in the IT programme. The core of the studies is self-directed learning and project work. While knowledge is introduced through lectures, you will process and apply it independently through problem-solving in various projects. Other learning methods include lectures, workshops, internships, work-life related projects, as well as themed sessions and seminars.

This project-based approach helps you develop the ability to identify problem areas and formulate questions in real-world professional contexts, enabling you to actively address them by linking theory with practice. It also enhances your ability to work effectively in teams.

General and foundation studies

During the first year, general studies (15 ECTS) foundation studies (35 ECTS) and language studies (10 ECTS) are completed. The general studies (15 ECTS) are common to all Bachelor’s degree programmes at Arcada. In the first year, you will also gain deeper insight into your chosen field. You will begin by learning about web development platforms and programming languages. The aim is also to give you a grasp of visually appealing design and an understanding of the nature of data.

Professional studies

The professional studies include the following modules, which are common to all Information Technology students:

  • Full-stack Development
  • Programming and Applied Natural Sciences
  • Service-Oriented Architectures and Development Methods

Before the third year of study, you will have the opportunity to apply for one of the following specialisations:

  • Data Processing and Analytics
  • Intelligent Robotics

Admission to the track is based on the grade point average. In order to begin specialization studies, the student is also expected to have followed the study plan during the first two academic years.

Development Studies

The curriculum also includes elective studies, known as development studies (30 ECTS). These are recommended to be completed during the second spring term (15 ECTS) and the third autumn term (15 ECTS). Development studies can be undertaken at Arcada or at another university of applied sciences. The current selection of development studies is presented during an information session for first-year students.

Practical Training

Thesis and methodology (Research studies)

The thesis is written towards the end of your studies. The process begins with participation in a methodology and thesis seminar at the end of the third year, during which you will, among other things, prepare a plan for your thesis.

The thesis should demonstrate that you, as a student, have acquired specific knowledge and skills, and developed the ability for independent reflection. The topic of your thesis is determined by the specialisation you were admitted to in your third year. The thesis process is supported by four study modules, which together form a support package:

  • Introduction to Research Methodology for Engineers (Year 2)
  • Advanced Research Methodology for Engineers (Year 3)
  • Swedish and Communication (Year 3)
  • Applied Research Methodology for Engineers (Year 4)

Many theses are carried out in collaboration with external partners.
