The understanding to design and analyse engineering components and structures under different loads (knowledge, skill)

The ability to use free body diagrams in the solution of engineering problems (knowledge, skill)

The ability to analyse and determine the displacement of members under axial loads (knowledge, skill)

The ability to analyse and determine the angle of twist and shear stress in shafts caused by torsion (knowledge, skill)

The ability to define the size of beams under bending (knowledge, skill)

The ability to design and analyse members under load using software (knowledge, skill)

Mathematics minimum 10 ECTS completed.
Mechanics or Statics.

It is not recommended for any student to attempt this course without first studying some Mechanics (Statics).

Students who have passed Strength of Materials in a previous year can not take this course. The course content is the same. There has been a change of course name only.

Students who do not pass the previous year's exams/re-exams are required to enrol and retake the course completely.

All deadlines dates must be meet for assignments. There is no late submission of assignments.


The course textbook is "Mechanics of Materials", Hibbeler, 10th Edition in SI units. The weekly lectures are directly based on the chapters from this book. Refer itslearning for more information. It is strongly recommended to obtain the textbook before the first class:

10% Individual Assignment 1 (compulsory)
10% COMSOL tutorial (optional)
80% Final Exam/ Re-Exam

Students who do not complete Assignment 1 by the deadline will be removed from the course. A pass mark in the final exam/re-exam of at least 40/80 and a total mark of at least 50/100 in total is required to pass the course. Previous years assignments are not valid for students retaking course.

Re-exam 1 gives all students an opportunity to improve their grade whether they sat the normal final exam or not. Non attendance of a re-exam is counted as one opportunity. Re-exam 2 is only for students who did not pass the first normal exam. The final exam will be based on chapters 1,4,5 and 6 from the course textbook.
