Coherently with John Dewey ideas on democratic education and participation, the main goal of this course is to enable students to make a critical and creative use of media. On professional grounds, the goal is to equip future media professional with advanced theoretical and conceptual tools in support of critical analytical and creative skills. On pedagogical grounds, the course is inspired by the works of Paulo Freire, Bertrand Russell and others on education. The aim here is to form independent thinkers, able to challenge authoritarian tendencies in society through the professional use of media.

Students will learn to use critical thinking in both its analytical and creative dimensions. The technical and commercial dimensions of media work will not be addressed in this course. Here the focus will be exclusively on the cultural dimension and more precisely:
a) on the interpretative traditions that constitutes the canons of in some influential forms of media usage and
b) on the possibilities of experimental usage of available media in our society.

The title of the project run at CML for this year is "Utopia as Method: The imaginary reconstitution of society in the digital age". In this project students will engage with the problem of social change to produce a narrative visualization of relevant social problems and their ideal solutions.

The course Critical Media Laboratory is a follow up of Critical Media Analysis and the competences acquired in the latter are necessary for effective participation to the former.
The course is in English and a good control of this language is also required.
