After completion of the course students are able to individually plan, design and develop activities with elderly that are aimed to enhance the quality of life for the elderly. Further, the student reviews how to plan and manage projects and outlines some of the basics of working in projects with teamwork.

Läranderesultat

This (10 credit) course is designed to integrate theory, practice and research of gerontology. The aim of this course is for the student to apply declarative knowledge of the elderly in activities carried out by the students in small teams. There will be regular meetings with students attending the course Activities with elderly, since this is a parallel course to it. These meetings allow students to correlate experiences of gerontology practicum with academic knowledge, share experiences, and broaden the knowledge of aging.
Several professional and generic competences will be related to during this course, they are:

- Demonstrating skills on how to communicate and interact with clients. Demonstrating good communication skills and is able to utilize information both verbally and in writing in English.
- are able to evaluate and reflect on own ethical actions, values and attitudes about human diversity in the care of older clients. This means taking responsibility for own actions and works in accordance with principles of justice, equality and solidarity regarding both the client and the team members.
- Comparing and analyzing information in a literature review. The student is able to define essential problem areas and utilize different methods systematically in order to develop these methods in an innovative manner.
- Demonstrating a deep knowledge of the health care and social service system. Students know how to plan and provide care for clients with physical as well as mental illnesses and disadvantages. This includes health promotion, prevention, support and rehabilitation.
- Skilled to implement team leading and team work. And students identify the methods project leading; project reporting and evaluation.

Mer information

- initial homevisits with younger students to the clients home are mandatory if not agreed otherwise with the supervising teacher and client
- supervision of first year students is mandatory as well as planning and participating in common meetings and seminar with first year students

Examinationskrav

Assessment:
Grade 1-5
Passed course requires
- Initial home visits with younger students to clients
- Teamwork with students from the course Activities with elderly.
- Planning and participating regularly (80%) in all common meetings with younger students guided by teachers and lectures.
- Mandatory seminar presentation 19.5.2010 for each team.
- Submitted scientific project report, dead-line 1.6.2010, minimum pages is 15.

Three stages are involved in assessing students performance:
1. Setting criteria for assessing the work
2. Selecting evidence that would be relevant to submit to judgment against those criteria.
3. Making a judgment about to which extent these criteria have been met.

In this course students are actively involved in stage 1 and 2, which means that we together in the beginning of the course set out the criteria for how assessments are to be done in this course. The students from the course Activities with elderly will also have a chance of giving feedback on how well the teamwork have been handled and this will also affect the final grade. Further there will be room for self-assessment which is to be handed in together with the final written report.
