The education in energy- and environmental engineering focuses on distributed energy systems. Energy renovations of buildings require a broad knowledge of building technology, energy technology and HVAC technology. The new forms of energy technology; heat pumps, solar heat collectors, fuel cells and wind power has still further requirements. The labour market has a great demand of experts with a comprehensive knowledge in all of this, and now at last there is an education that gives you exactly these competences. For you who want to influence climate change and in addition be certain that you have a job after graduation, the programme in Energy and Environmental Engineering is a valuable alternative.

The education gives you the ability to plan and supervise the renovation of buildings, taking into account energy consumption, environmental sustainability and costs. This requires that you master the fundamentals in building technology and HVAC systems as well as have a comprehensive knowledge of energy-related aspects, both heat transfer and production with minimal energy loss. The studies also include legislation and business administration studies, e.g. investment and profitability.

The practical part of the studies focuses on precisely those tools that you are expected to master as a graduate and that you will use at your future workplace. The education, which focuses on distributed energy systems, is unique in Finland. The contents of the curriculum have been developed in cooperation with more than ten well-respected companies and authorities.

What can you do as a recent graduate?

  • create sustainable and modern energy systems for real estate properties
  • plan heating, plumbing and ventilation systems
  • improve energy efficiency in already existing real estate
  • improve ventilation and indoor climate
  • find cost-effective solutions and increase the value of properties

What does the education provide you with?

  • guaranteed work within the energy- and HVAC fields – most likely already during the studies
  • after finishing the studies you are legible to apply for certification for e.g. HVAC planning, as a supervisor or energy expert

Study environment and study language

The Degree Programme in Environmental and Energy Engineering is taught in Swedish, but be aware of that many courses are taught in English.

The international study environment at Arcada, as well as your study and work practice opportunities in Finland and abroad also prepare you for an international career.

Your own responsibility and activity in organizing and completing your studies is essential for your studies at Arcada. This is supported by both individual and group counselling throughout your studies. The planning of your studies is made through regular contact with your programme director, teacher tutor and the amanuensis.

Student exchange

To study or work abroad is a valuable experience for you both as a student professionally and on a personal level. The experience opens new doors and opportunities. Students of Arcada have good opportunities to travel abroad and complete part of their studies there, Arcada collaborates with universities and institutes of higher education from Tromsø in the north to Johannesburg in the south, from Canada in the west to South Korea in the east.

Research focus

As a student at the department of energy and materials technology you have the opportunity to participate in the active research environment of the institution and in various ongoing projects. The department employs researchers, teachers and students side by side in various research, development and innovation projects. In the applied research the department focuses on multifunctional materials and energy efficiency and in its work it is keenly aware of the current needs of the society and commercial market. In cooperation with the students, the researchers develop everyday products with the aim of finding practical, tangible solutions to challenges our environment faces and new forms of cost effective energy renovations of real estate properties.

One of our areas of priority is functional materials, which constitutes an example of research cooperation between several departments at Arcada. The aim is to produce smart solutions within healthcare, the social area and the energy field.

Through close collaboration with business life, your theoretical knowledge is developed to practical competences already during the studies. Your work placements give you the perfect opportunity to roll up your sleeves, gain work experience and not least to get a toehold in many organisations and businesses.  In many courses you work within projects in co-operation with national and international companies and you can also choose to write your thesis in an external organisation.
