Competency aims

The aim of the course is to focus on the exposure to and practice of general language functions, both in spoken and written language.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student is expected to be able to
-discuss his/her studies, work and housing
-communicate orally in shop/café and restaurant settings
-ask for directions and also give directions
-use the numerals 1-1000
-tell an interlocutor about himself/herself, his/her family and hobbies
-talk about the weather/the days of the week/the months of the year, the seasons of the year
-manage simple oral situations where health is the issue
-write simple messages
-form simple declarative sentences and questions in the present tense and the past tense both orally and in writing
-understand simple statements about himself/herself (reading comprehension)
-grasp the essential information in simple texts which deal with everyday life (reading comprehension)
-understand words and expressions about himself/herself and his/her local environment when the interlocutor is speaking slowly

Course contents

Basic structures of the language, Everyday situations, Discussing one's future, Work and Studies, On the telephone. Life in the Nordic countries.

Recommended or required reading

We use the book: Vi ses! Svenska för nybörjare. By: Keränen, Lindroos & Peltola 2018, Otava.

The book includes dialogues and exercises and is used both in the first and the second course in Swedish. Get the book before the first lecture!
