Competency aims

This course contributes to increase the competence within the contextual clinical care and medical competence.
The competence increases in the medical and surgical context and the medical competence will also consolidate.
Theoretical knowledge and practical skills in medical-surgical nursing.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student is expected to be able to:

understand the connection between health resources and health-deficits that are caused by medical and surgical diseases

understand the nature of medical nursing and the get a holistic view of the nursing process

understand the nature of surgical nursing and get a holistic view of the surgical nursing process

understand the nature of surgical nursing and to get a holistic view of the nursing process in different situations

integrate knowledge from anathomy and physiology, pharmacology and surgery and the the different areas of nursing

The student understands the importance to be and act aseptic

The student takes care of the medications to the patients

The student cares for and observes the patient with intravenous therapy of fluids and drugs

The student documents and reports the patients care

The student gives pre- and postoperative care to patients with the most common surgical operations

The student has a holistic view of the nursing care of the surgical patient, able to prepare the patient for operation, to follow the operation and to take care of the patient after the operation

The student understands the importance of drug therapy for patients with medical and surgical diseases

The student understands the specific nature of pediatric care and be able to meet the basic needs of the child an the family.

The student can reflect upon ethical issues

The student is aware of the competence level and to ask for supervision when there is lack of knowledge

The student follow the ethical guidelines for nursing

Central problems in surgical nursing

Prerequisites and co-requisites

Students need to have completed the following courses to go on practical training:
- Practice in clinical care
- Pharmacology and medical calculation
- Drug calculation semester exam

Student must have attended:
- Anatomy and physiology
- Medicin 1
- Clinical care
