Competency aims

Within this study unit we will focus on the
following competencies:

-Understand and explain physiological and
pathophysiological states related to trauma
patients in prehospital emergency care

-Understand the mechanism of injury in trauma care
and how to evaluate trauma energy

-Perform an adequate anamnesis and systematic
extensive trauma assessment and identify signs of
acute and/or life-threatening states related to
traumatic injuries in prehospital settings.

-Initiate treatment and safely treat the trauma
patients in prehospital emergency care according
to current standards and also make motivated
decisions of non-conveyance

-Direct patients and patients? relatives in
questions of continued care, based on current
directives and evidence.

-Participate as both team leader and follower in
prehospital emergency care teams according to
expectations of advanced level.

Learning outcomes

Once you have completed the study unit you will be
able to:

-Knowledge in how a traumatic injury affects the
physiology and pathophysiology and also be aware
of the most common signs and symptoms found in a
traumatically injured patient.

-Understand the central concepts of trauma care,
i.e. trauma energy and mechanism of injury and can
apply them in the care of the traumatically
injured patient.

-Act as both responsible paramedic 1 and also
paramedic 2, according to current standards,
treatment directives, responsibilities and
principles that guide the work of paramedics on
advanced level in relation to a traumatically
injured patient

-In accordance with treatment directives, perform
an adequate trauma assessment of patients and
assess need for care, triage and also make
decisions of non-conveyance based on current
directives.

-Can, based on a valid and adequate assessment,
determine the most appropriate healthcare facility
and initiate treatment on scene and/or during
transport and give directives for continued care
to non-conveyed patients

-Is able to use the most common and appropriate
immobilization tools and methods in the treatment
of traumatically injured patient.

-Is able to perform the most common life-saving
procedures in the care of a traumatically injured
patient (ex. needle thoracosentesis,
chricothyreodotomy, application of tourniquet and
treatment of threatening external bleedings)
