Competency aims

Students gain knowledge about diseases and receiving skills to apply treatment principles for impairments in respiratory and circulatory system as well as the musculoskeletal system in the context of Orthopaedics and Traumatology disorders.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student is expected to be able to
- show a deep knowledge in physiology related to the respiratory organ and the blood circulation
- show a deep knowledge in the biomechanics of the big joints in the lower limb
- assess, plan, implement and evaluate physiotherapy related to common respiratoy, heart and peripheral vascular diseases
- assess, plan, implement and evaluate physiotherapy related to common orthopedic and traumatic disorders
- describe methods and treatment principles for electrotherapy and thermal treatments
- appropriately assess the need of, plan, accomplish and evaluate physiotherapy interventions in acute and rehabilitation phases according to the patient's individual problem and life situation
- show knowledge and be able to adapt methods, models and different forms of movement aiming for health promoting goals for individuals and groups
- choose evidence based physiotherapy methods
- show knowledge and understand ethical principles that comes with the profession, and be able to follow them in practice
- get knowledge about actors in the public, private and third sector

Course contents

Lower limb and Electrotherapy:
- Treatment principles in physical therapy. Thermal treatments. Electrotherapeutic treatments
- Conservative and pre- and postoperative physiotherapy related to problems in the hip, knee and ankle region

Respiratory and circulation:
- Physiotherapy in restrictive and obstructive respiratory diseases
- Pre- and postoperative physiotherapy in connection to abdominal and chest surgery
- Physiotherapy and health education in cardiac and vascular problems, and metabolic syndrome
- Physiotherapy in peripheral vascular diseases
