Competency aims
The aim of the course is to develop the student's abilities in the design and analysis of engineering components. In particular stress, transverse shear, stress transformations and deflection will be covered. This includes a deeper understanding of the field of Mechanics of Materials.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student will be able to:
Design beam and shafts under combined loading conditions
Perform stress transformation calculations
Apply theories of failure to the loading of different materials
Calculate the deflection of beams
Analyze the buckling of columns
Course contents
Tranverse Shear
Combined Loading
Stress Transformations
Strain Transformations
Design of beams and shafts
Deflection of beams and shafts
Prerequisites and co-requisites
A prerequisite of Strength of Materials or "Mechanics of Materials 1" is required.
The student should obtain the course textbook before starting the course. It is assumed the student is familiar with chapters 1-6 of the course book before starting this course. This course will cover chapters 7-12. The course textbook can be used in the exam.
Previous course names
