Competency aims

The aim of the course is to prepare students for
changes in society that connect to the sharing
economy, to be able to pay attention to the
challenges and opportunities, and to offer
understanding and analytical tools to prospective
employees, freelancers and entrepreneurs in
culture and media.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student is expected
to be aware of changes and social tendencies that
attach to the sharing economy. Students can
orient themselves and be proactive and active in
this environment. Students can analyze sharing
economy, and adapt their creative work to it.

Course contents

What does it mean to work with culture and media
in the sharing economy? An economy dominated by a
digital existence, immense success for companies
like Google, Facebook, Uber and AirBnB, an
insecure labor market with snooping jobs and
increased performance requirements, an abundance
of information, consumption demands and climate
anxiety, as well as a desire for alternatives and
meaningful life.
The course contains five parts:
1) Culture and media in the sharing economy
2) The insecure working life
3) Moving consumer roles and networks
4) The importance of self-management and life
management
5) A variety of networks, services and platforms
(analysis assignment with seminar where the
students present their cases)

We examine the sharing economy on a broad front
and from several perspectives, but initially a
sharing economy is defined as follows: the part
of the economy where peers give each other access
to underutilized resources, property as well as
services, against or without payment. This can be
done using digital platforms or through analog
ways. However, it is common for resources to be
shared with users beyond their own circle of
acquaintances. (SOU 2017, 64).

Prerequisites and co-requisites

Participants are expected to have basic knowledge
of media and culture. Otherwise, the course is open
to all specializations in media culture, as well as
to students in cultural production.
