Competency aims

With the explosion of "Big Data" problems,
analytics has become a particularly intriguing
field in many scientific areas as well as in
marketing, finance and other business
disciplines. People with analytical skills are in
high demand. Or, one could even claim that
everyone participating in modern work settings,
need to understand what data (and analytics) can
do.

In this course, we will introduce the students
into the world of analytics and business
intelligence.
Concentrating on the application of
analytics and decision making in practice.
The project task will be to create a business
intelligence system from scratch (in theory).

Learning outcomes

After completing this course the students should
be able to

- understand the role of data analytics in
supporting decisions

- understand how businesses today are utilizing
analytics

- understand the limitations and benefits of
analytics and business intelligence

- have a basic understanding of the available
tools today. I.e. what is possible today and what
is only fantasies.

Course contents

The course consists of lectures circling around
the topics "analytics and business intelligence
in todays organisations" and "how analytics can
support decision making"

During the course, the students are encouraged to
complete several self study tasks. Basically by
reading and viewing material and reflecting on
them.

As the main course assignment, the students are
asked to design their own business intelligence
system from scratch. In theory and with unlimited
resources.

Prerequisites and co-requisites

Entry level, no previous knowledge needed.

Assessment requirements

To pass the course the student should, during the
project work, show that the student understands
why and how analytics and business intelligence
is used in organizations of today.

For higher grades, there is an need to show
increased awareness about how these systems are
technically and theoretically designed and
implemented.
