Competency aims
The aim of the course is that the student is able
to independently judge the relevance of various
research methods available.
Learning outcomes
After completing this unit, students have shown
their ability to articulate and contextualise a
relevant, scientific research question.
Furthermore, they have proved their ability
their understanding of the value of various
research methods in media and communication
studies and to identify a method relevant to
their own research question.
Course contents
This unit contains an exposition of the
processes pertinent to research questions and
choice of method, including ethical
considerations.
Lectures and exercises. The final session of
the course consists of a seminar during which
the students argue their research question and
their choice of method. Each student acts once
as presenter and once as discussant.
The final examination consists of a course
paper that presents a synthesis of the
coursework.

To pass this course the student is required to
actively take part in lectures, discussions,
exercises and seminars.
The course grade is based on the seminar
(presentation and discussant contribution).
The exact criteria for the individual grades
are as follows:
1-2/5 The student is familiar with central
questions and concepts.
3/5 The student understands the relationship
between concepts and other items but lacks in
independent ability to apply them.
4/5 The student is able to form meaningful
contexts and is able to apply concepts as well
as prove other skills.
5/5 The student is able to contextualise
relevant substance matter and to apply it
independently.
