Competency aims

The aim of the course is to introduce the ideas of interactive storytelling in a critical way that leaves participants able to articulate the practical and theoretical difficulties in trying to create an interactive story.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student is expected to be able to:

1. define interactive storytelling and explain clearly what it is, and what it isn't;
2. clearly distinguish between different modes of interactive storytelling;
3. produce one or more examples of the designs for a simple interactive story;
4. pitch the ideas for the interactive story in terms of a specific intended audience.

Course contents

Block 1: theories and practices
Block 2: creating a storyboard for an interactive story using the theories presented
Block 3: creating story worlds for reusable stories
Block 4 group project: story world
Block 5: group project: creating and pitching a story world and sample story for a specific target group.

Additional information

The course will take place almost exclusively online. There will be one compulsory meeting at the beginning of the course, and a second meeting at the end.
