Competency aims

-To give students the skills and understanding to produce 3D CAD parts and drawings of engineering components.
-To understand and use SolidWorks design capabilities.
-To perform stress analyses of components and to determine their factor of safety.
-To produce professional engineering reports.

Learning outcomes

-Use solid modelling software (SolidWorks) to create 3D solid models of parts from orthographic engineering drawings.
-To create assembly models of engineering components using solid modelling software.
-To create engineering orthographic and isometric drawings from solid models of engineering components.
-To perform stress analysis of engineering components using simulation application.

Students are assumed to be able to produce orthographic drawings using engineering software such as AutoCAD when they begin.

Assessment requirements

Assessment:
-Submission of the "Introduction to SolidWorks Tutorial" (10%)
-Submission of individual assignment Design of a Chair (90%). Note Urkund will be used to analyze these reports for similarity. Correct scientific writing skills are a very important consideration in the assessment. It is not based on just the engineering design work.
-There is no compulsory attendance of lectures for this course. Although attendance is recommended, students may choose to complete all work entirely individually also.
-Passed assignment marks can not be improved by resubmitting marked reports.
-Previous year's assignments are not valid.

Week 47: Patterns from Weekly tips and exercises. Modelling a dice.
