Competency aims

The main aim of this course is to give the student practical
experience in medical nursing

Learning outcomes

After completing this practical rotation, the student is expected to
be able to:
-be able to integrate knowledge from different sciences/courses
such as anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, microbiology,
pathology, internal medicine, as well as nursing sciences
-understand the nature of medical care and form a comprehensive
picture of the care process
-understand what resources are available to health professionals
when caring for patients with medical issues
-understand the importance of communication during care
-improve the patients well-being by creating a caring relationship
-possess basic nursing care skills, such as; meet the patients
personal hygiene needs, nutritional needs, and monitor the
patients vital signs
-apply the treatment process, for example, to observe/assess,
analyze, plan and implement basic care
-meet the patients underlying problems, needs; and desires, and
increasingly see the patients whole care picture
-be able to administer subcutaneous and intramuscular
medications
-see the patients health resources and health obstacles,and take
these into consideration while administering care
-document on patient care/condition (record keeping, end of shift
report)
-provide for the needs of the patient during end of life
-be aware of their own level of competence and seek guidance
when knowledge and skills are lacking
-follow the ethical guidelines for care
-understand the importance of confidentiality
-understand the importance of ethics in cooperation between staff
and the patients family members

Prerequisites and co-requisites

The student must complete the following courses:
Patient safety and Evidence based care,
Medicine 1&2, Clinical Care 1 theoretical studies,Clinical care 1 practical internship,
Medication administration and dosage calculation, Medical
Surgical Nursing

Assessment requirements

To accomplish this course each student will:
-during the first week of the practical training experience, provide
the teacher with their contact information and the contact
information of their practical training placement
-submit their personal goals
A minimum number of days and hours per day will be set prior to
the beginning of the practical training experience and must be
accomplished by each student.
-The student must receive a passing grade during their practical
training experience.
-Two weeks after the completion of the practical training
experience, the student must submit a written report.
One evaluation form from the students practical supervisor, one
evaluation form from the student and a completed schedule must
be submitted
