Competency aims

The competency aims of this course is that the
student has basic knowledge in medication
administration and calculation and is able to
administer medication to the patient safely.

The student has basic knowledge in patient
safety
and knows the most common patient safety
theories.

Learning outcomes

MEDICATION ADMINISTRATION
After completing the course, the student should
be able to:
- see the medication administration as a part
of the patient care, involving knowledge in
ethics, law, anatomy, physiology and chemistry,
pharmacology and mathematics
- know the different ways of administration and
forms of medication and understand how they
affect the patient
- know the different steps in the medication
process acknowledge the importance of being
part of the development of this process
- know what safe pharmacotherapy is, what good
practices in medication administration is and
how these are linked to patient safety
- is aware of the responsibility involving
medication administration and know how to act
according to current regulations
- master the terminology used in pharmacotherapy
and the dosage calculations needed to ensure
patient safety
- is able to meet the special needs of the
agening patient and guide them in questions
concerning their medication
- is aware of the importance to create a patient
safety promoting culture

PATIENT SAFETY
You should:
- be able to explain the terms used in patient
safety
- be able to give examples of the most common
patient safety theories
- understand how risks can be prevented and
limited
- understand how human factors can affect your
work and how you can manage your work by working
in teams to improve patient safety

Prerequisites and co-requisites

Basic calculation/ mathematics.

Additional information

The students has to pass the course to go out
on
practical training.
After passing the course, the student has to
pass
one medication calculation exam each semester
to
be able to go out on practical trainings. The
medication calculation exam cannot be older
than
6 months when going out (the date the practical
training starts).
