Competency aims

This course contributes to increase the competence within the framework of clinical care practice with an emphasis on surgical nursing.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student is expected to be able to: Theoretical knowledge - understand the connection between health resources and health- deficits that are caused by surgical diseases -understand the nature of surgical nursing and to get a holistic view of the nursing process in different situations - integrate knowledge from anathomy and physiology, pharmacology and surgery and the the different areas of nursing Activity in practical situations - understand the importance of aseptic conduct in the clinical setting - prepare and administer medications under supervision - monitor patients undergoing intravenous therapy. - document and report on patients care - provide pre- and postoperative care to patients and their families - have a holistic view of the care rendered to surgical patient. For example: able to prepare the patient for surgery, to follow the operation and to take care of the patient after the operation - understand the importance of drug therapy for patients with surgical diseases. Ethical considerations - can reflect upon ethical issues - be aware of the competence level and to ask for supervision when needed -follow the ethical guidelines for nursing

Students need to have completed the following courses prior: - clinical care practical training 1 - Pharmacology and medical calculation - Drug calculation semester exam - theoretical course in medical/surgical nursing

Assessment requirements

To accomplish this course each student will: -during the first week of the practical training experience, provide the teacher with their contact information and the contact information of their practical training placement -submit their personal goals A minimum number of days and hours per day will be set prior to the beginning of the practical training experience and must be accomplished by each student. -The student must receive a passing grade during their practical training experience. -Two weeks after the completion of the practical training experience, the student must submit a written report. One evaluation form from the students practical supervisor, one evaluation form from the student and a completed schedule must be submitted
