Competency aims

The aim of the course is to teach the modern
methods of analysing and identifying materials,
in order to successfully apply the taught
techniques
to solve realistic engineering problems.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student is
expected to be able to understand modern
analytical methods used and choose an
appropriate testing method for the analysis
and
identification of different materials.

Course contents

Lectures and theoretical exercises on selecting
analytical methods, spectroscopic methods,
thermal
methods, chromatographic methoods, microscopic
methods and failure analysis.

Laboratory exercises on optical microscopy, UV-
Vis, FTIR, DSC and chromatography.

Prerequisites and co-requisites

Laboratory Safety for Engineers or Introduction to
University Studies (2017-18 or earlier)
