Additional information

The recommended course calculators which encourage the development of mathematics skills are non-programmable, non-graphing types:
Canon F-715SG, Casio FX-82EX, Casio FX-85EX, Casio FX-82AU

COMSOL software from lab.arcada.fi

All deadlines dates must be meet for assignments. There is no late submission of assignments.

Recommended or required reading

The course textbook is "Mechanics of Materials", Hibbeler, 10th Edition in SI units. The weekly lectures are directly based on the chapters from this book. The text is also used in the Mechanics of Materials 2 course. Refer itslearning for more information.

Other optional reference textbook:
"COMSOL 5 for Engineeers", Mehrzad Tabatabaian, Arcada Libguides.

  • Essays, reports, productions and portfolio

Assessment requirements

10% Individual Assignment 1 (compulsory)
10% COMSOL tutorial (optional)
80% Final Exam/ Re-Exam ("Mechanics of Materials", Hibbeler from Perlego or printed allowed.

The final exam will be based on chapters 1,4,5 and 6 from the course textbook.

Students who do not complete Assignment 1 by the deadline will be removed from the course. A pass mark in the final exam/re-exam of at least 40/80 and a total mark of at least 50/100 in total is required to pass the course. Previous years assignments are not valid for students retaking course.

GRADING.
50-59 Grade 1 Satisfactory
60-69 Grade 2 Satisfactory
70-79 Grade 3 Good
80-89 Grade 4 Good
90-100 Grade 5 Excellent

Re-exam 1 gives all students an opportunity to improve their grade whether they sat the normal final exam or not. Non attendance of a re-exam is counted as one opportunity. Re-exam 2 is only for students who did not pass the first normal exam.
