You can understand the different capabilities and applications of SolidWorks software (Knowledge)
You can use SolidWorks as a design tool. (Skills)

You can use both solids and surface modelling in the creation of designs. (Skills)

You can use simulation software to access the performance of parts. (Skills)

You can use standard design libraries in the design process. (Skills)

You can produce 2D drawings from 3D solid models. (Skills)

You can produce 3D parts, drawings and assemblies using SolidWorks. (Skills)

You can conduct stress analysis using CAE software and to determine whether parts are designed with a proper factor of safety. (Skills, approach)

Course contents

Introduction to SolidWorks, user interface, options and basic sketching techniques

Working with planes and sketches

Further techniques: Lofts, swept and revolved sections

Patterns

Simulation and Analysis

Surface Modelling and Assemblies

Configurations, global variables and equations

Prerequisites and co-requisites

Technical Drawing - Students are assumed to be able to produce orthographic drawings using engineering software such as AutoCAD when they begin.

The course is however not recommended for open university students without special permission due to the already maximum seats for the computer classes being filled.

Previous course names

This course was formerly called Solid Modelling. Students who have passed Solid Modelling may not take this course.

Students not fitting into this classroom group of 48 students should enrol to the PM-2-031 (0) group found from the Materials Processing Technology (Swedish) - Process- och materialteknik programme.

Assessment requirements

Assessment:

Assignment 1: Submission of the "Introduction to SolidWorks Tutorial" (10%)

Assignment 2: LinkedIn Learning courses (10%)

Submission of individual Project "Design of a Chair" (80%). Note Urkund will be used to analyze these reports for similarity. Correct scientific writing skills are a very important consideration in the assessment. It is not based on just the engineering design work.

There is no compulsory attendance of lectures for this course. Although attendance is recommended, students may choose to complete all work entirely individually also.

Passed assignment marks can not be improved by resubmitting marked reports.
