Competency aims

To give students an understanding of the structure of materials and their role in manufacturing processes. The information covered here is meant to be a building block on the knowledge gained by the students in manufacturing processes and to be a building block on the knowledge gained by the students in manufacturing processes and chemistry and will further develop their understanding of the properties, processing characteristics and capabilities of modern engineering materials, such as ceramics, polymers and composites.

Learning outcomes

1) To relate the atomic structure of materials to their mechanical properties.
2) To explain the effect of impurities on the mechanical properties of materials.
3) To design the manufacturing processes for the production of engineering products.
4) To choose an appropriate material for products for each application.
