Competency aims

The aim of the course is to develop the student's abilities in the design and analysis of engineering components. In particular stress, transverse shear, stress transformations and deflection will be covered. This includes a deeper understanding of the field of Mechanics of Materials.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student will be able to: Calculate stresses in members due to shear Design beams and shafts under combined loading conditions Perform stress transformation calculations Apply theories of failure to the loading of different materials Calculate the deflection of beams To be able to use COMSOL beam module for the analysis of beams. Perform a laboratory bending test according to SFS-EN ISO 178
