Competency aims

The aim of the course is to teach modern methods
for applying materials science knowledge to
physical challenges in engineering.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student is expected
to be able to understand the physical properties
of materials, their scientific basis,
investigative methods and modern applications.

Prerequisites and co-requisites

For the lectures in period 2: no prerequisites

For the lab exercises in period 4: Laboratory
safety for engineers or Introduction to
University Studies (2017-18 or earlier)

Additional information

The lectures and theoretical exercises will be
held onine in Zoom.

The lab exercises are scheduled for period 4.
They will be held in small groups and comply
with guidelines for safe working. Alternative
tasks may be allocated to students unable to
come to Arcada for the lab exercises.

Much of this course is based upon three
textbooks Tro's "Chemistry: Structure and
properties" (Pearson), Shackelford's
"Introduction to materials science and
engineering" (Pearson) and Callister's
"Materials science and engineering" (Wiley).
