Competency aims

To guide the student in selecting, performing and writing his engineering thesis.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student is expected to be able to:

  • select a suitable topic for his thesis
  • produce an outline and table of contents for his thesis
  • plan a working schedule for performing his thesis
  • find and use guidelines for writing his thesis

  • List of completed theses - Potential thesis topics
  • Internal or external thesis? - In Finland or abroad?
  • Thesis vs. work practice - Thesis financing
  • Thesis work methods - Supervision and support
  • Thesis structure and content
  • Thesis writing and language
  • Thesis presentation - Thesis approval process
  • Being an opponent to another thesis

Prerequisites and co-requisites

The student should be ready to start his/her thesis work within the same year as the thesis seminar. This normally means having a minimum of 80 credit units by the end of the spring term.
