Competency aims
The aim of the course is to maintain and extend
the development of Arcada's SL island, as a
learning platform, and to research
strategies for using virtual worlds in business
communication and distance learning.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student is expected
to be able to:
- understand the applicability of virtual worlds
to learning
theory: - analyse the differences between closed and open
worlds, in
terms of possible pedagogy; - construct simple learning objects in Second
Life or RealXtend; - create a strategy for testing learning objects;
- produce the outline of a short learning module
using objects
that the group has constructed.
Course contents
Participants will form teams, and assume
responsibilities for exploring learning theory, in
terms of serious games and learning through
exploration. Teams will also develop content
(graphical and programmed) to be used on the
island.
Prerequisites and co-requisites
Students should be familiar with interactive
social web sites, such
as Facebook, Flickr, or MySpace. Students should
also have some
knowledge of, and interest in, virtual online
spaces or games, such
as Habbo Hotel, Second Life, World of Warcraft,
and others.
Additional information
The course is project based. The precise nature of
the projects and their deadlines will be determined
during discussions in sessions 1
& 2.
