Competency aims

The aim of the course is to start the thesis project by reviewing and
learning all critical areas relevant for work on the thesis.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student is able to:
- understand why the thesis is a crucial part of a master's degree
- understand the key skills (not specific to the thesis topic) that a
student will learn as a part of the thesis work
- understand the structure of a master's thesis
- understand differences between research methods, and how to
solve a specific problem
- understand the role of theory and previous research
- find relevant previous literature
- understand different ways to analyse empirical data
- create a research plan for a thesis project
- identify a research topic of interest either individually or together
with the employer (or some other organization)
- choose a relevant problem to be solved
- formulate a clear aim for the research, and a research design
that supports that aim and solves the problem at hand

Course contents

The course content consists of:
- the role of the thesis in a master?s education
- what is science, and how does it differ from an opinion?
- master thesis structure
- an introduction to research methodology
- analysing empirical data
- the role of theory and previous literature
- how to find a relevant thesis topic
- how to define a research problem and aim
- how to plan the work
- how to find relevant previous research and literature

Prerequisites and co-requisites

A bachelor degree and at least two years work
experience gained after completing the higher education degree.

Assessment requirements

The course grade (pass/fail) and credits will be awarded in two steps.
Three credits in the spring, based on an essay and a thesis draft. Two
credits are awarded in the autumn, after the first supervision sessions
with the thesis supervisor.
