Competency aims

The primary aim is to develop English communication skills required in the professional context. The course also aims to provide the student with the necessary support in study skills (writing, researching, presenting) to succeed in his/her degree studies.

Learning outcomes

in academic areas:
- write appropriate, coherent and cohesive academic text in correct English.
- integrate source material into writing according to appropriate academic conventions.
- read with greater efficiency and take effective notes from written material and lectures.
- have enhanced his/her ability to participate in routine academic interactions.

in professional areas:
- demonstrate lexical and grammatical competence in written and spoken professional contexts.
- demonstrate the ability to write effective key professional documents.
- have attained a better understanding of the relationship between linguistic form and meaning, as well as the linguistic features of professional texts.
- demonstrate a greater facility for dealing with professional discourse in English.
- prepare and deliver a presentation with
effective use of IT tools, e.g. PowerPoint.
- have enhanced the ability to participate in social communication in the professional setting common to routine interactions.

Course contents

Professional writing, Presentations
Review of language structures; effective communication; professional English (form, style, vocabulary); academic writing (the research & writing process); professional writing (documents, correspondence, work applications & CVs, reports).

Entrance examination in English

Additional information

Attendance to all classes is compulsory. All graded assignments are subject to deadlines and must be completed BEFORE the exam.

Assessment is based on participation, completed course work and the final exam.
