Competency aims

The aim of the course is to deepen in comprehensive destination management which includes all actors in one destination. The aim is also to recognize the cooperation of different actors in a destination. One important aim is to identify the importance of tourism companies ability to compete on a responsible way.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student is expected to be able to have a deep knowledge of one chosen destination in Finland or somewhere else. He/she does understand the competitiveness of destinations compared to other destinations. He/she can evaluate management skills displayed in the case of a successful responsible destination. The student will be able to analyze the position of a tourism company from an internal and external points of view.He/she will also consider the impact of future trends .

Course contents

Analyse of different sectors and networks within tourism fields. Analyse of tourism enterprises and entrepreneurship, future development and the effects on people and destination as it is. Some destinations will be familiar during the course.

Additional information

Webb course is on itslesarning and will be councelled of Hellevi Aittoniemi. Presentations(in March 2014) of destination analysis will also be evaluated of Nigel Kimberley (both written and oral). All attendants of the course must be present when starting the course January 2014. You must also visit Travel Fair the in January- one assignment will be available on itslearning before course start.

Assessment requirements

To pass the course the student has to pass all parts in the course: discussion, learning report, destination analysis and take part on contact classes . Also taking part of the presentations is obligatory . The evaluation fokuses 40% on learning report, 10 % class and 50% analysis assignment(incl. diskussion)-this part will also be evaluated from the language point of view.
