Competency aims

The course aims to enable students to design, maintain and administer a range of CMS installations that meet the specified needs of a client.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student is expected to be able to

1. Understand the benefits of automating the input and maintenance of a web site

2. Understand the importance of completely separating structure and content

3. Create and administer a Wordpress web site

4. Create a Wordpress theme for a specified user group

5. Integrate Wordpress with other online services to fully manage a site's content

Course contents

Block 1: introduction to Wordpress ; creating a wordpress.com site

Block 2: administering, theming and customising a site

Block 3: the anatomy of a Wordpress theme

Block 4: css variables; the WP Loop

Block 5: Front pages, galleries and grids

Block 6: moving a static site into Wordpress

Blocks 7 & 8: creating a theme from nothing

Blocks 9 & 10: Final project

Prerequisites and co-requisites

Students should have completed the course Structuring Information, having handed in all the assignments and achieved at least a grade 2. In the event that a student has not completed this course she or he will need to demonstrate the following competences.

1. Understand the fundamental principles of web design

2. Understand the principles of pixel-based design theory

3. Demonstrate familiarity with, and competence in using, an online IDE

4. Be able to create a working web site that follows current best practice.

5. Specifically students must be able to work with html 5, css 3 and the Zurb Foundation framework.

Assessment requirements

Project 1: a wordpress installation to a brief
Project 2: a one-page installation to a brief
Project 3: a theme created using grids or Foundation
Project 4: a social media site

Projects 1 to 3 will count for 20% each. Project 4 will count for 40% of the marks.

The emphasis is on the practical work done within deadlines. Absence without notifying the teacher affects the grading even if all tasks would be finished within given timetable.
